HDDVD Format officially discontinued by Toshiba

via Missing Remote : Toshiba Announces Discontinuation of HD DVD Businesses

As per this article – the main backer of the HD-DVD format Toshiba has officially pronounced the format dead – and will immediately wind down shipments of players/recorders (and start carving up some of the IP created for other future technologies.)

Although there was only ever going to be one winner out of the BluRay vs HDDVD format war – I think this is a real pity for consumers – as I always preferred what HDDVD had to offer in terms of affordability (much cheaper recordable media) , extensibility  (XML based interactivity layer instead of reliance on Java) plus the intention to allow for managed copies.

A bunch of early adopters who invested in the format already (either via purchasing the Toshiba players, the cheaper XBox360 addin drive, or the movies themselves) are going to be pretty disappointed. (and will be stacking these up near their Laser discs)…

  1. I had gone both ways, a Blu-ray rom in the media centre and Bronwen picked up a cheap hd-dvd from the US when she was over there with 10 free movies. So I guess I had to loose and win! The pity is we now have a split collection of movies across 3 formats.
Any word on whether hd-dvd movies will suddenly be at run away prices? I personally think they should give anyone with a player 50 free movies to say thanks for trying 🙂

  2. Hey – sorry to hear you got stuck with one of these (and not a hybrid rom)  – hope it was the $99 Walmart deal(?).. I guess the good news is that I think all the HDDVD discs will eventually become very very cheap (until they are pulled off the shelves) – so probably a really good way to get loads of titles at very little cost. (as there were a lot of older classics released – plus I think Transformers is only HDDVD at the moment which is a damm cool flick).  Don’t expect any freebies though from Toshiba/Microsoft (or others) – they aren’t that nice… (but hey maybe you can get a cashback on a Toshiba BD if thats available – maybe call them and complain – worth a shot!)..
Luckily I procrastinated and didn’t get either format yet (as WAF had to be maintained too!)… Maybe when my local dvd store starts to hire BD then I might get one. (but never been one to purchase movies I’m only going to watch once).
